Called Out Of Darkness

Author : Ann Doupont   Top Author

Christian Articles Resource Cross In 1 Peter 2:9, we see that we are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people…that we should show forth the praises of God who has called us out of darkness into his marvelous light.

Looking at Isaiah 60:2, we see that darkness shall cover the earth and gross darkness the people…but the Lord shall arise upon us and his glory shall be seen on us. Looking up the Hebrew word translated “darkness” in this verse; I found that it is referring to “misery, destruction, death, ignorance, sorrow, wickedness.”

In 1986, I wrote a song that went like this:

He took out all the wrong and made everything right.
He gave me a brand new song and turned my darkness into light.
He put me where I belong and made me acceptable in his sight.
Oh yes, He made me very strong and he increased my might.

Thinking of another verse, Matthew 6:22, we can see the words of Jesus, saying that the eye is the light of the body, and that if the eye be single, the whole body shall be full of light. And in Psalm 119:130, we’re informed that it’s by the entrance of God’s Word that light is given.

Where is God’s Word to enter? Into our hearts. I have found, by experience, that when I take a verse and meditate on it over and over, speaking it out and pondering it, it will then eventually drop down from my head into my heart. More light has then entered in.

My favorite verse of all is Proverbs 3:5-6, which is my assurance of God’s guidance in my life. My favorite version of the Bible for memorizing is King James. Based on these verses, I check with the Lord to see if there are any areas of my heart where I’m not trusting Him…as it says to trust in Him with all of our hearts. If so, I amend that area, asking Jesus to be the Lord of it.

Over the years, there’s only been one area of my heart that He has shown me that needed to be amended, which I find interesting (that it’s always the same area). When trust in people is broken, it’s sometimes difficult to trust even God…yet He is our only hope. I believe that it’s by an act of our will that we enter into trust…thinking and saying, “I will trust God!”

In many ways we are tempted. All of us have fallen short of the glory of God…yet, He’s so faithful to pick us up and put us back on the path of light…His Word is that light (Psalm 119:105).

Years ago, the Holy Spirit spoke to me saying that I am called to full time ministry, but to not try and get there…that as I just kept doing what He put before me to do, and do it with all of my might, I’d find myself there. It happened just as He’d spoken it to me, but I hadn’t even realized it till about 2 years later.

We are each called out of darkness and into His marvelous light. The entrance of God’s Word (into our hearts) brings that light. By meditating on His Word over and over, it will enter into our hearts. Then, when it’s needed, it’ll be there for us directing our paths.

With love from a called out one,
