Love Changes Things! The Father's Love

Margie drove over to Debra’s house after work one Thursday evening. Debra had called in sick and was not answering her phone. Margie was concerned for she knew Debra lived alone. Knocking on the door, she was relieved to hear someone walking toward the door.
“Oh, hi Margie,” Debra said as she opened the door. “You can come in but I have a bad cold. I wouldn’t want you to catch it. Have a seat.”
“I was just worried about you. I tried to call you a couple of times today. Were you sleeping?”
Margie was surprised to see Debra’s eyes start to fill with tears.
“What’s wrong?”
“I just didn’t want to talk when you called. Three years ago today was when my dad was killed in that car wreck. I’ve been crying all day. I miss him so much!”
Margie hugged Debra, letting her cry on her shoulder.
“I am so sorry! I didn’t know it was today.”
“And on top of all of that,” Debra moaned, “Mother told me yesterday that Mr. Robison has asked her to marry him. You know they have been dating for about six months. I thought maybe it would help my feelings for Mother to date but Mr. Robison is nothing like Dad.”
“Oh Debra. You can never replace your dad and you don’t have to. He is in heaven waiting for you.”
“I know he is in heaven. But so many times I need to talk to him. We were so close.”
“One thing that might help is to write in your journal about your father. You can release some of the stuff pent up in you. Also remember what Paul said in Romans 8. That was my father’s favorite chapter in the Bible.”
“What did Paul say?” Debra questioned.
“In verse 15-16 in the Message Bible it says:
‘This resurrection life you received from God is not a timid, grave tending life. It’s adventurously expectant, greeting God with a childlike “What’s next, Papa?” God’s Spirit touches our spirits and confirms who we really are. We know who he is, and we know who we are: Father and children.’
God is your Father all the time, especially when your earthly father is in heaven.”
“I try to tell myself that. I try to talk to God but I still want my dad back.”
“I wish my father were living too,” Margie said. “I tell myself that one day I will get to spend all of eternity with my father and that God loves me right now and will help me through each day. Verse 38 and 39 in Romans 8 give me comfort. “I’m absolutely convinced that nothing—nothing living or dead, angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable—absolutely nothing can get between us and God’s love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us.”
“God loves me even on days like this,” Debra said slowly. “Days when I am sick and weak and wondering.”
“I think on days like this, He loves us even more. We just have to talk to Him about our issues and receive His love.”
“Can you stay for a while?” Debra asked. “I was looking at this photo album and I would like to share some good memories of my dad. I can’t wait to see him again!”
